I Predict Big Things for this CD

Monday, October 15th, 2007

I got a preview disc of Junior Senior’s “Hey Hey My My Yo Yo” and it totally bops. I’m dancing all over my living room flinging sweaters around and doing The Pony. It’s like the Cowsills meet The Jackson Five and boogie till they puke with Abba. Totally fun fun fun pop tunes. I think it’ll be huge.

Dig this Crazy Fashion Video!

Monday, October 15th, 2007

I was innocently surfing over to the Gucci site (yeah okay so I can’t really afford anything from Gucci but I saw this chick at the Y in these great Gucci glasses and she said they weren’t all *that* much money so I thought “What the hey?” and away I went.)

And guess what I found? Maybe you already knew, but I didn’t. David Lynch did their video! Check it out and let me know what you thought. It’s kind of like if you own enough Gucci you might have a psychotic break or turn into Laura Palmer of something. It’s addictive though. Personally I’m sorta over Heart of Glass.

Is Google Getting Into the Phone Business?

Friday, October 12th, 2007

This just in from Technology Review
Earlier this week, Google announced that it had acquired Jaiku, a Finnish startup that lets people broadcast short updates about their locations and activities over the Web or to their friends’ cell phones, a concept called microblogging. The terms of the deal haven’t been announced, but regardless of Jaiku’s price tag, the purchase could be a significant one. Google has long been rumored to be working on a mobile phone, or “gPhone”; Jaiku was originally developed as software for cell phones, and one of the company’s cofounders, Jyri Engeström, was a product manager at Nokia.

Hmmmmmm and apparently our Google pals aren’t talking. Gee that’s a surprise….I heard they had a bid in on the moon.

In this podcast, Cathi Bond offers us two stories from the recent Japan Times.  Reports are that more and more married women are using their gym as an opportunity to hook up and have affairs.  Plus, thesniffer’s favourite nerdy Japanese young men, the Akibaki, have found a new place to hang out, according to the Japan Times, since being driven out of their old haunts by tourists.

Meanwhile, Popgadget tipped Nora off to this new wristwatch by Hitachi. It’s biometric! It monitors your body functions.  Are we all going to be monitoring our bodies 24/7 in the future, and what will that do to our sense of ourselves?

On this podcast, Nora Young talks about the concept of “branded utility”, a term coined by Johnny Vulkan to refer to businesses being, er, useful. Nora wonders whether usefulness and community involvement might be a requirement for businesses to be successful in the future. Read the interview with Johnny Vulkan at the psfk blog here.

Meanwhile, Cathi Bond finds an intriguing storage solution from Australia (via gizmag). Unicraft Joinery turns your steps into drawers!

Also, Nora thinks this walk across Queen Street The Torontoist reports on is a great idea! So, why didn’t she go?

In this trendwatching podcast, Cathi Bond has a great (or horrifying) story on ever-encroaching ads: ads stretched out on the land along the flight path of airplanes! Is it Blade Runner-esque? A nightmare? Or both? Check it out at ad-air

Nora Young talks a bit about her new CBC show, Spark. She’s happy with the show, but hopes that more people will comment at the blog. How participatory is participatory media?

If you’re interested, you can listen to the entire show (with Creative Commons music) at the blog, or subscribe to the podcast here. Thanks for checking it out!
